Family Business Day 2015 Hamburg is a unique opportunity to interact with family business entrepreneurs and scholars from all over the world. World-class family business entrepreneurs will share their experiences on various aspects of leading and managing a family firm. Their insights will be complemented with reflections from renowned scholars from the field. The day is bookended by a key note speaker with years of experience in studying and guiding family business scholarship and advising family businesses.

Alfredo De Massis, Ph.D. (UK)

As a tenured Full Professor, Alfredo De Massis holds the Chair in Entrepreneurship and Family Business at the Lancaster University Management School (UK) and is Director of the School’s Centre for Family Business. He co-founded the Center for Young and Family Enterprise of the University of Bergamo, and served as Global Board Member and Chairman of the European Leadership Council of the Global STEP Project for Family Enterprising. He serves as member of the Academic Advisory Board of the IFB Research Foundation and as Program Chair-Elect of the Special Interest Group on Family Business Research at EURAM, and is a Family Owned Business Institute Research Scholar.

He serves on the Editorial Boards of Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Family Business Review and Journal of Family Business Strategy, and has been Editor of eight special issues on family business research in journals like California Management Review, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice, Global Strategy Journal and Small Business Economics. His most recent book (co-authored with Pramodita Sharma, Jess H. Chua and James J. Chrisman) entitled “Family Business Studies: An Annotated Bibliography”, was published by Edward Elgar in October 2012. 

Alfredo teaches about family business, entrepreneurship and innovation management at undergraduate, master and doctoral levels at Lancaster and elsewhere. Prior to his academic career was Manager in SCS Consulting, senior consultant in the Strategy service line of Accenture and financial analyst at the Italian Stock Exchange (London Stock Exchange Group).

María Gloria Alarcón (Ecuador) 

Maria Gloria Alarcón is a successful businesswoman and a community leader in her home city of Guayaquil, Ecuador.

After serving as President of the Guayaquil Chamber of Commerce, the Ecuadorian Federation of Chambers of Commerce, and the Ecuadorian Entrepreneurship Committee and the Andean Community Entrepreneurship Counsil, she was appointed Executive VP of Tonicorp, a mainly family owned Holding Company that owns – among others – the country’s largest yogurt and dairy company; an ice-cream factory; a plastics converter; a logistics and a distribution company with consolidadet sales of over $350 million. In year 2014 the family sold its shares in Holding Tonicorp to JV of the Coca-Cola company and Arca Continental.

In September 2009 she was named Honorary Consul of Finland in Guayaquil. She serves on the board of various corporations and organizations, and for years has been speaker in leadership, innovation, democracy and freedom.

Robert Lorenz–Meyer (Germany)

Robert Lorenz-Meyer is owner and Chairman of the Ernst Russ shipping group founded in 1893 by his great-grand-father. As Managing Director he has been responsible for the development of the Ernst Russ Shipping Network in particular in the Far East with offices in Beijing and Shanghai. In addition to the ship owning activities the group offers a large variety of services including chartering, agency and yard representation.

Robert has been studying at the Hamburg University and Hochschule St. Gallen, Switzerland. He has participated in various programmes at Columbia University and Kellogg School of Management. Prior to joining the family business Robert has been working with Allianz Insurance AG in Munich.

Robert Lorenz-Meyer has been President of BIMCO and the German-Finnish Chamber of Commerce.

In addition Robert is a member of the Board of the German Shipowners Association and Vice-Chairman of West England P&I Club as well as holding various positions in other associations and companies in the industry.

Adriana Adler (Brazil)

Brazilian, German origin, third generation of the biggest toy industry in Latin America, Brinquedos Estrela S.A , has lived the experience before, during and after joining the family owned company.

Has been a consultant for 19 years. Founder  of Ekilibra Governança Integrada,  works as family business advisor, mediator and coach. Focus in development, family governance, conflict management and sucession planning. Before worked as executive search at PMC/AMROP, Banco Itau and Brinquedos Estrela.

Holds a BA in Marketing at ESPM-SP and Post-Graduated in Business Administration at EAESP-FGV. Certified mediator by Instituto Familae; Corporate Mediation by ADR Group (London) and at UC Berkeley with Ron Kelly. Certified on Organizational Conflict Management with Rudi Ballreich at Trigon. Coach by Integrated Coaching Institute. Post-Graduated in Group Dynamics by SBDG. Family Advisor certified at FFI - Family Firm Institute and as Board Member Program at IBGC - Instituto Brasileiro de Governança Corporativa-SP. Teaches at FDC, IBGC, PUC. Marita Rautiainen (Finland)

Marita Rautiainen, D.Sc. (Econ. & Bus.Adm.) is a postdoctoral researcher at LUT Lahti, Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT), Finland. She has a strong background as an entrepreneur and a researcher of entrepreneurship. Her post-doc research focuses on the family business, innovation, entrepreneurship, business portfolios and ownership.

She belongs to Nurminen Family Business. The story of Nurminen Company began in 1886 when the founder started business activities with the timber business. At the present time Nurminen has a large business portfolio covering businesses from logistics to cleantech and sustainable development.
